The National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) is the best thing to happen to the cycling world since the invention of the wheel. NICA is an organization dedicated to developing youth mountain bike teams that race against each other in their respective state. We are fortunate enough to have one of the almost thirty teams in the Alabama league. It is an amazing sport for youth development, and for the development of the cycling world as a whole. It’s all about getting #morekidsonbikes!
Who Can Join?
The Northwest Alabama NICA Team is open to any boy or girl in the 6th through 12th grades. These athletes will train together, learning how to use their bikes for trail riding, and ultimately they will race against others in their category. Racing is not the focus, but it is a great way for each rider to challenge themselves and their peers!
When does this happen?
Training starts in December and continues through April. There are 6 races throughout Alabama, which start in March and continue through the first weekend of May. The practice sessions are on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the week, and Sundays on the weekend. The team arrives to the race venues on Saturdays to pre-ride the course and camp out with the team, and the races begin Sunday morning at 9am. The race schedule is listed below.
How do you get involved?
The team would love to meet you ASAP! Even if the training or race season isn’t underway, they have group rides and social events throughout the year. The best way to get in touch with them is to email firstname.lastname@example.org with your contact info and they will get back in touch with you.
